Air travel
Belgaum Airport (Sambra)
A compact domestic airport about 10 km from the city, and the main reason north Karnataka travellers no longer have to drive to Goa or Hubballi for a flight.
Airport basics
| Airport name | Belagavi Airport, Sambra |
|---|---|
| IATA code | IXG |
| Distance from city | about 10 km — 20 to 30 minutes by road |
| Type | Domestic, single terminal |
| Typical connections | Bengaluru, Mumbai, Hyderabad and other metro routes by regional carriers |
| Transfers | Taxis and app cabs; autos available but fewer at odd hours |
Routes and airlines on regional networks change often. Check the airline or airport website before planning a connection.
Using the airport
The terminal is small, which is its advantage: check-in and security rarely take long, and reaching about 90 minutes before departure is comfortable for a domestic flight. There is limited seating and a small food counter, so it is not a place to arrive three hours early.
Getting there and back
- Book a cab the night before for early-morning departures.
- Hotels on the bypass and Ring Road are closest to the airport road; Camp and the old city add 10–15 minutes.
- During heavy monsoon, allow extra time — the approach road and visibility can both slow the run.
If flights do not suit
For Goa, Kolhapur or Hubballi, the road and rail options are often faster door to door than a connecting flight. The overnight buses to Bengaluru and Mumbai remain the most used long-distance choice in the city.
